What is LegalShield, and what is LegalZoom?

LegalShield’s website says it helps millions of people with legal issues through a plan that starts at around $1 a day. Its homepage calls its service “Real lawyers. Unreal prices.” and lists popular topics including family law, debt collection, will planning, real estate and trademarks. Its privacy policy names the seller as Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc., doing business as LegalShield.

LegalZoom’s website describes “Legal solutions trusted by millions, designed for you,” with step-by-step tools and attorney guidance for business and personal needs. Its tools include starting a business, protecting a brand, creating a will or trust, and customizing legal contracts. Its privacy policy names LegalZoom.com, Inc. as the seller.

Neither one is a product you take or apply to your body, so there are no ingredients, doses or side effects to compare. The real questions are what the service covers, what it costs, and how you get out if it does not fit. If you want published research on a health-related topic, PubMed lists a study record from the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

What is similar to LegalShield?

LegalZoom is the closest match in this comparison. Both give you access to attorneys and help with documents. LegalShield says its lawyers help with “an unlimited number of personal and business issues” for one price. LegalZoom says you can “Get personalized legal guidance from an attorney” with “Upfront flat fee pricing.”

Both also let you start without a lawyer call. LegalShield offers free AI document review with its tool Elle™, with no account needed. LegalZoom’s guided tools ask you a few questions online, then deliver the service you chose.

Does LegalZoom work for an LLC?

Yes. LegalZoom’s LLC overview page says that to form an LLC, “you’ll need to file articles of organization with the state,” and that “Each state has its own rules.” Its homepage says it works “with government agencies as needed” to get requests filed. Its LLC packages come in tiers, and its homepage lists a “100% Accurate Filing Guarantee”: if your filing is rejected or incorrect due to its error, it says it will correct the filing with the government agency at no additional cost to you.

LegalShield’s pages focus on lawyer access, documents and popular legal topics. If company formation is what you need, ask LegalShield in writing whether a plan covers it before you pay.

LLC rules and filing requirements differ by state, so check your state’s requirements whichever company you use.

What does LegalShield actually do?

LegalShield says its plan gives you access to lawyers for an unlimited number of personal and business issues, starting at around $1 a day. Its homepage says it covers 4.5M people and that its lawyers average 22 years of experience. Will LegalShield represent you in court?

LegalShield’s homepage describes lawyers for personal and business issues and a directory for finding one near you. Ask LegalShield in writing whether a plan covers appearing for you in court, and how the lawyer is chosen, before you pay.

LegalZoom says it “is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice, except where authorized through its subsidiary law firm LZ Legal Services, LLC.” Its advertisement notice adds that the information you give LegalZoom “is not protected by attorney-client privilege.” If you may need someone in court, ask both companies in writing what they will do and whether a lawyer will appear for you.

What does LegalShield not cover?

LegalShield’s homepage describes coverage for an unlimited number of personal and business issues and lists popular topics. The line between what is covered and what is excluded belongs in its plan terms. Ask LegalShield for the list of covered and excluded matters, and read it before you pay.

How do you reach customer service?

LegalZoom’s pages list several phone numbers. Its homepage shows (855) 681-8735 at the top and (855) 787-1922 under “Talk to a specialist,” where it says you can connect with a specialist “in under two minutes.” Its privacy policy lists (800) 773-0888 for Customer Care, its will page header shows (888) 379-0854, and its LLC page gives (888) 310-0151 for cancelling. Who should choose each one?

LegalShield suits you if you have many small questions across personal and business life and want lawyer access under one daily-rate price, along with a directory to find a lawyer.

LegalZoom suits you if you need a specific filing, such as an LLC, or a single document such as a will, and you want guided tools and attorney help tied to that product. Keep the monthly renewals in mind before you choose a package.

Some people will want both. Compare the cost of each line on your own list, not the headline price.
