Avvo Reviews: Ratings, Lawyer Checks, and Free Help Guide

Avvo is a lawyer directory and free legal-question forum, not a law firm. Use its reviews and 1–10 rating to narrow a list, then compare the lawyer’s state-bar record, the actual scope of help offered, and your free legal-aid options before you hire anyone.

What company is Avvo?

Avvo says it launched in Seattle in 2007 and joined Internet Brands in 2018 as part of the Martindale-Avvo network, alongside Martindale-Hubbell, Nolo, and Lawyers.com. It describes its service as a directory with lawyer profiles, client reviews, ratings, and a free Q&A forum.

That distinction matters when you have a legal task in front of you. Avvo can help you find and compare lawyers; it is not the lawyer who takes responsibility for your matter. Start by matching the practice area and state to your problem, then read the profile closely before you request a consultation.

How do Avvo reviews and ratings work?

Avvo says only people who hired or consulted with an attorney may post a review, and that reviews must meet its Community Guidelines. A review tells you about one person’s experience; look across several reviews for recurring details about communication, responsiveness, fees, and the type of legal matter.

Its separate Avvo Rating is a 1-to-10 score. Avvo says its algorithm considers experience, education, peer endorsements, and disciplinary history; it labels the range from “Extreme Caution” to “Superb.” Treat the number as one comparison point, then read the underlying profile and check the lawyer’s license in the state where the lawyer practices.

Profile feature How to use it
Client reviews Read several, with attention to the legal issue and dates.
Avvo Rating Use it as a starting point for questions about background and discipline.
Practice area and location Confirm they match the state and court connected to your task.
Consultation Ask what work is included, who will do it, and how fees are charged.

Is Avvo free, and what does it cost?

As of October 28, 2026, Avvo says searching its directory and posting an anonymous legal question are free. It also describes a free concierge service that connects you with an attorney in your area. The price that matters most is usually the lawyer’s own consultation or representation fee, so ask for the scope of work and fee arrangement before you agree to hire anyone.

If a paid online legal service is part of your comparison, separate document preparation and general information from access to a licensed attorney. The FTC’s DoNotPay order requires the company to stop unsupported claims that its AI service performs like a real lawyer. That is a useful reason to ask exactly what service you are buying and whether a licensed attorney is included.

Where can you find a lawyer or free legal help?

Avvo can be a useful place to make a shortlist. For a free route, USA.gov’s legal-aid guide points people to Legal Services Corporation programs, LawHelp.org, law-school pro bono programs, free forms, and the American Bar Association’s online question service for qualifying low-income users. The available help and eligibility depend on where you live and the kind of civil problem you have.

The Legal Services Corporation locator lets you search for an LSC-funded civil legal-aid organization by city or address. For a fuller route through eligibility, pro bono help, and local resources, see how to find free legal aid.

What can you handle yourself, and when is a lawyer worth paying for?

You can do the comparison work yourself: identify the court or agency involved, keep the notice and every deadline, make a timeline, gather the documents, and ask focused questions in a consultation. A legal deadline organizer can help you record service dates, response dates, and proof without guessing.

Paid legal help may be worth considering when a deadline, court filing, hearing, contested facts, substantial money, housing, family, employment, criminal exposure, or a state-specific rule could change what you need to do. Rules and court procedures vary by state and court. Ask the lawyer whether they handle your exact court or agency, what they will prepare or appear for, and what you still need to do yourself.

How should you check a lawyer before hiring?

  • Use Avvo to identify the lawyer’s state, practice area, reviews, and profile details.
  • Compare that information with the lawyer’s record at the applicable state bar; Avvo says state bar associations are among the public sources used for profiles.
  • Ask whether the lawyer is taking new clients and whether the consultation has a fee.
  • Get the scope of work, fee arrangement, and who will communicate with you in writing.
  • Keep every notice, order, contract, message, and payment record together.

If someone pressures you to pay for forms or legal help by an urgent message, slow down and document the offer. Our guide to online legal document scams explains the identity, fee, refund, and lawyer-verification checks to make first.

What about Martindale-Hubbell, Lawyers.com, Reddit, and “top rated” results?

Martindale-Hubbell and Lawyers.com sit in the same Martindale-Avvo network, according to Avvo. They can add another profile or rating view, while forum discussions such as Reddit can surface questions to ask. None replaces checking the lawyer’s active license, the state where your matter is pending, and the written terms of representation.

“Top rated,” a five-star average, or a high Avvo score is not a substitute for fit. The useful comparison is narrower: does this lawyer handle your type of matter in your state or court, explain the next step clearly, and offer a scope and fee arrangement you understand?

Do lawyer titles and degrees answer the hiring question?

Questions about the “lowest” or “hardest” kind of lawyer, whether a JD can use “doctor,” whether law is harder than medicine, or whether a JD ranks above a PhD do not tell you whether a lawyer is licensed for your task. The same is true of a public figure’s degree. For a hiring decision, confirm the attorney’s state license, practice area, court experience, fee terms, and availability instead.

Comparing Avvo with other options

Free court self-help, legal aid, and other online legal services are compared side by side in our online legal services guide, so you can see what each route costs and includes before you choose.

Before you contact a lawyer

  • Write down the exact legal problem, the state, the court or agency, and every date on your notice.
  • Ask the state bar for the lawyer’s current licensing and discipline information.
  • Ask legal aid whether your income and civil matter qualify for free help.
  • Ask a paid lawyer what the consultation covers, what work is included, and what the total fee arrangement is.
  • For a suspected online offer or payment problem, use these online scam legal remedies to preserve records and identify reporting options.
